Reducing Waste

We’ve long been dedicated to helping protect our planet, establishing environmental standards for coffee suppliers and taking a green approach to store construction. One problem we’ve been working for decades to solve: waste.

Shortly after we went public in 1992, we began the process of reducing our impact and adopted our first environmental mission statement, committing to “a role of environmental leadership in all facets of our business.” We offered customers free bags of used coffee grounds to enrich their gardens and compost. We gave discounts to those who brought in their own mug. We wrapped hot drinks in paper sleeves. We stocked more tumblers and added inexpensive reusable cups. We introduced a new steaming pitcher that reduced milk waste. We improved our to-go cup.

And today we‘re reaching ever higher. We‘ve worked  to eliminate single-use plastic straws, and  and committed to cutting our waste in half by 2030.

Old coffee grounds gain new life with the Grounds for Your Garden program.

We partner with the Environmental Defense Fund to create our first hot cup sleeve to reduce waste and eliminate double cupping.

We complete the global rollout of EarthSleeve™, hot cup sleeves made from less paper and more post-consumer content than previous cup sleeves.

Commits to new environmental goals: phasing out disposable plastic straws by 2020 and operating 10,000 ‘Greener Stores’ globally by 2025.
